Thanks for that, I shall keep onto HR and see what they say.

You need to get your mum onto it, or if she's not up to that, get the company to agree to speak to you as a representative of your mum, for which she may need to sign a letter or some such.
They shouldnt be speaking to you at all without her permission.
You're missing the point: it isn't anything to do with OP's mother unless and until HR start making enquiries on behalf of the trustees who will take the decision.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Its not even clear from OP's posts whether deceased relative's HR department have been properly notified of the death.
Without formal notification, usually requiring Death Certificate, HR department can't be expected to do anything at all.

HR have been informed and my mum will be taking the death certificate and forms of ID on Saturday, and we shall go from there. I have a question on his death certificate first cause says Covid 19, even though he tested negative then second says a big long couple of words dumbed down to saying Alcohol misuse, will this affect any pay out?

Probably not, but will depend entirely on the rules of the death in service scheme/terms of the life policy. Employers can and do impose exceptions from cover, but these are fairly limited.
