Can newspapers print someones address if their identity is protected through a national database?

Options
Hi, so just a bit of background to begin with. I am asking this question on behalf of someone who is currently serving a short jail sentence. This person has their identity protected through the national crime agency due to sex trafficking and the trafficker making numerous attempts in the past to locate them. In light of this persons recent conviction, this story was published in both local and national newspapers & online. Their name & address was also given but has since been removed from the online versions. This puts the person at huge risk and extremely vulnerable. Is there any legal route that can be taken, due to the news media printing their address?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Was this published BEFORE they were protected? Or more to the point, before the media were informed that it was protected information?
Or were the media even told the information was protected in the first place?
