Tracing old pension

Hi
Does anyone know if it's possible to track down an old personal pension plan when you can't remember the name of the provider? Surely HMRC must have details as I was contracted out but the pension finding service requires you to know the name.
Thanks!

Trouble is this could be anytime from 1988 on...and not too many of us keep bank statements that long.
HMRC will have confirmation of the dates of contracting out, but no reason why they'd keep details of which personal pension provider was involved.Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -
HMRC should have a record of which scheme holds the GMP liability, if applicable.Marcon said:Trouble is this could be anytime from 1988 on...and not too many of us keep bank statements that long.

But it won't be a GMP liability - it's an appropriate personal pension, which would give rise to protected rights.Silvertabby said:

What payment? As his nephew you would neither inherit any part of his state pension, nor be eligible for a spouse's pension from his BT scheme.abirenenhan said:My uncle died six years ago aged 71 he paid into his state pension all his life he worked for British telecom I have never had this payment I am his next of kin ......is this right ....thank you0 -
If it was a pension used purely to contract out of SERPS, there won't be any payments showing on old bank statements if the only contributions to the scheme were (as was common) just the NI rebates, which were paid directly by the then-DHS to the pension provider.macman said:Checked your old bank statement for the debits?Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0
