Buying a Fridge / Freezer

Hi all,
I'm looking to buy a fridge/freezer (anything up to £300). Ours is about 10 years old. Is there anything I should be looking for in terms of features?
Any recommendations?
Is it better to buy now or after Xmas? If after Xmas, how long after Xmas?
Currently, we have a separate fridge and freezer. The cheapest way we can find to dispose of them is via the council - 2 large items for £10. Argos seems expensive at £15 each. Is there any other way? I'm not too fussed on this one I guess as its only a tenner, but its good to know if I can get it free!

COuncil disposal is cheap and convenient - done it a couple of times over the last few years.
Things to look for: do you want a combination fridge/freezer, or two stand alone appliances?
For either type, look for good ventilation in the fridge, and capacity in the freezer. You may see two freezers the same internal size BUT because of the shelving arrangement one may actually hold less than another i.e. a four-drawer freezer will hold less than a three-drawer because the actual drawers themselves take up precious space.
Have a look at Good Housekeeping website for pointers on domestic appliances:

If your current fridge/freezer still works how about freecycle, that way it wont cost you anything.0

Thanks for the replies.
We'll go with the council I think.
We're looking for a fridge / freezer with a larger fridge compartment on the top.
Will look around.
Thanx
