The interface for CD/DVD drives is so standardised that a functioning player will work on practically any machine with a USB port.

20 ish years ago via pc /tower/wired mouse etc I transferred photos to discs. Then via laptop with cd drive treansferred more. Years on I use a chromebook, and have found forgotten discs and am unable to view them, but want to.   Now I'm looking for a £300 ish laptop with cd drive for mainly geberal surfing, emails, google photos, google mail, google keep.  I don't need it for gaming, films, spreadsheet etc.
    Any suggestions, recommendations

Just don't buy cheap no-name rubbish, as you might not get any support when needed.
Thanks, quite reassuring to see that he was able to view photo's , but, as he was using an Acer Chromebook 15, wonder if I could ascertaing if it would be compatible with an Acer Chromebook 14?.
Why would you think it wouldnt?

Because I'm totally over cautious, ha ha, sort of belt n braces. I've seen there are some on ebay for a fiver plus P&P, I assume the sellers are simply disposing of items they no longer want and to be honest, whether I buy new or secondhand, once I am able to view the photo's, I will send to google photos and the dvd thing won't be needed again.

really? I didn't know that. My son told me the chromebooks dont have a hard drive as such, so cant store a great deal.
If I have understood this correctly, I simply plug the CD/DVD drive into the USB post of the chromebook, I then search for photo's (next question will be where), view and rt click and same to google photos, right?.

Don't buy cheap no-name rubbish. Samsung, LG, Lite-ON, ASUS etc are ok. Buy cheap, buy twice.
But perhaps a cheapie will be ok for a one-off task. Make sure the seller is sending from the U.K.

I don't use Chromebooks, so I can't be absolutely sure, but give it a minute or so (probably less) after you've loaded the CD and it should either open a view onto the CD or prompt you to ask what you would like to do with the CD.

Because Chromebooks have a shelf life, no mentioned by providers or suppliers. Which is why it was a mistake them buying a handful of them at work a few years ago. We all told them they were a mistake.

On the underside of every Chromebook box there should be a date which tells you when the device will no longer be supported by Google so will no longer get any more updates.

    I've avoided them ever since

Decent £300 laptops. Hmm. HP not too bad or Lenovo. Check out Ebuyer.com and read the reviews to see what people have said. Then what I normally do once I've picked one I want. Before purchase, I'll google "Issues with blah blah laptop" and see if there are known issues with the one I've chosen and how easy they are for me to repair myself.
