What to stand a real Xmas Tree on?

Last year we had a real Xmas tree for the first time and we stupidly didn't put enough protection underneath it and once we removed it almosty a month later there was a a dirty great sticky mark on my lovely new cream carpet!!
This year we have new oak floors and I would cry/die if anything ruined my lovely new floor - so my question is what can I stand it on to make it safe from wobbling over and also protect mt wooden floors?
I know its early but I love Xmas and our first baby is due in 7 days so thought we should get these done sooner rather than later !!
Thanks in advance !

I've put mine in a bucket. Which you can always decorate if need be? I always put my prezzies under as soon as my tree is up so you can't see the bucket. Alway's works well & is nice & sturdy! HTH?

If your tree is a cut off one rather than one with a root this may be a bit more tricky? but they do sell proper stands for them. I'd still be inclined to stand it in a box perhaps?
Know how your feelling,Our baby is due in 4 weeks! I've been nesting like mad,our tree went up yesterday.
Good luck! Our 1st baby is due 29th December 2007! :rudolf:
I'm hopeful that this get's me out of cooking Christmas dinner!
Baby Ruby arrived after 55 hours of labour & an emergency c section on Christmas Day at 14.41 weighing 6lb 6oz...And yes I did get out of cooking Christmas dinner!!:rotfl:0 -
Wilkos have some tree stands basically its a stand with clamps on to hold the tree on. They also have a tree skirt to protect the floor on and goes under or over the base0

Whenever we put ours in a bucket we put on a piece of plastic and carpet square (the sort that are outside carpet shops for 50p).
I then use hessian to wrap around the top of the bucket and let it flow over the piece of carpet and then pop the pressies on top of the hessian.
I then wrap a huge red bow around the rim of the bucket to hold it in place.
Or you could make/buy yourself a tree skirt.0 -
we bought a christmas tree stand, which has the clamps to hold the trunk, but also has a water reservoir which , if you keep it topped up, helps prevent the needles dropping too badly0

My parents have a christmas tree stand that clamps the base of the tree to keep it upright, and holds water to keep the tree alive. Underneath the stand, they put down a thin-ish towel (so that it doesn't de-stabilize the tree) to catch any spills. To hide the towel, they put down a sheet of christmas wrapping paper, so if there is a big gap, you see the wrapping paper, not a towel, which I always thought was a nice touch.0

Thank you everyone for all your top tips.
We finally used an off cut of carpet, with a plastic rectangular low crate on top covered in xmas paper, then popped the tree in a bucket with some sand and stone to hold it in place and it was perfect.
Once all the presents were stacked the base it covered anything unsightly and looks beautiful - even if I do say so myself !!
Hope you're feeling okay Becky - I'm still waiting for our little bubbah to make its appearance - can't come soon enough !!
Take care and have a very merry xmas !
