Child Maintenance and College postponement

Hi
I wondered if anyone could help? My ex-husband pays maintenance for our son who is awaiting his GCSE grades. He has applied for an apprenticeship and also has a college place on offer as a back up plan. We have been told today that the apprenticeship is on hold until October to see if colleges do actually open and if they don't it will be postponed a year. At this stage therefore, it is unclear whether he will be going to college or doing an apprenticeship and when colleges will even open. I understand that maintenance should cease in September if he is deemed to have finished education by then but with COVID it is not clear what is happening. I know my ex cannot wait to stop paying maintenance, so I have been trying to check the position before speaking to him as I don't want another dispute and I cannot get in touch with the CMS as they say they are not answering the phone.
Thanks in advance!

I suspect that he will be deemed to still be in education for now - primarily due to this being unprecedented.

That is my view but there is nothing to confirm it. I think maintenance would stop once he starts an apprenticeship, but he can't make any decisions about college until they make a decision about the apprenticeship - so he's stuck in limbo!0
