Very Red Semi-Permanent Hair Dye

Hi I've got naturally ginger hair and dyed it permanently black ages ago (I'm alright, I'm 18 and what some of you would call a "goth") anyway I want to dye it red now but use semi-permanent dye and no bleaching!
Any recommendations what to use?
I want it to be very red, and then darker where the black hair is (the black hair will prob stay black).
Any recommendations what to use (and where to get it)?

Never used this part of the forum before, wasn't really sure where to post this question so moderators feel free to move it if it'll get more attention elsewhere!

Unfortunately, it will not be possible to dye your hair red without pre bleaching your black hair first. Since you will be stripping out an artificial colour and then putting on another one, I would recommend you get it done professionally. Go along to your local college on a model night to get it done cheaply under expert supervision.

Hehe, I wouldn't go to college you know what they are like
Have it trimed to get the bottoms neat and let it grow out, its looking nice now anyway.

I'm a bit gung-ho when it comes to dying my hair as I've been doing it myself since I was 13 (a few years ago....) and have always been happy with the result (OK, there was one time, but it got sorted with more dye on top, hehe!)

Recently I went from very dark brown dye (it's my natural colour but it's also full of grey so I dye it even if I'm my natural colour) to BRIGHT red, and used the pre-lightener from L'Oreal first. It was about £6 but because there was a L'Oreal lady hanging around who I asked for advice she gave me a 50p or £1 voucher so that helped.

And I was really pleased with the result. After the lightener my hair was a kind of light browny yellow (like Paige in Charmed was for a while) then the red took really well. That was also a L'Oreal dye and very red.

It was more obvious when my dark (and grey!) roots came through next to my dyed red hair so now I'm on a red/brown.

Whatever you do, do what you want, and have fun! Remember, hair grows again! ;)

and nopey dopey, you cant take black out without bleach, and probably need strong bleach, and probably need 2 lots of it. sorry, but black is a devil to get out, if you do put bleach on it at the strength required it will probably leave your hair like straw and will then need chopping off.... yes hair does grow again, as long as the scalp isnt burnt and disfigured, or the hair follicle isnt damaged. If you insist on doing it yourself take a small cutting first and try it on a bit rather than all of it.

    sorry me dear....

oh... one more thing.... WILL YOU ALL STOP CALLING IT DYE... ITS COLOUR - NOT DYE ..... .....  :wall:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh think ill move this to the vent board lol.

  • Why isn't it called dye :P.
I said I'd dyed it black and that that was ages ago, theres not much black left now (my hairs grown ALOT since) which is why. Its sort of a mixture of black and brown and ginger now, but I want it looking good again cos I'm fed up it looking like I've dyed half my hair hehe.

Anyway, I'll have a look for that pre-lightner, I didn't want to use permanent products but I might have to to turn it red hehe.

Try Wella's Jamaica Rum, it worked great for me. You probably know all about the strand test thing, but make sure you do one cos Boots ran out of Jamaica Rum once when I needed more so I bought a very similar colour (in fact the colour on the box looked the same), when I used it my hair went pink

but if your hair has faded a bit, if you use a red semi on it, it may act as a 'filler' and the colour will be absorbed into the hair if its porous. However, it will be a dark red colour.

However, its a bit of a lottery really. You had best get it done at the hairdressers to be on the safe side.

I dye my hair allegedly "permanent" black (another goff) but it always fades to a reddish colour! I'm having a break from black and using permanent reds for now. I've got this rather stripy effect with red at the top and faded blackish-red at the ends.

If you want to permanently give up on black it might be easier to get it cut and keep having trims till the black disappears. Mine is so long I can't bear to get it cut hence the two-tone effect :o

I agree with the others that you might be safest getting a hairdresser to bleach the black away because if you get it wrong your hair can literally break off at the roots, I know several people with very short hairdos after bleaching went wrong!

Seriously though, all this abuse will damage your hair and you'll have to give it lots of TLC so it doesn't look like straw. How about getting a short cut to give your hair colour a fresh start? In the meantime you could get falls for a bit of length and colour.
  • Hehe maybe I should borrow my sisters digital camera and post a picture of my hair so you can see what I mean, and btw my black has turned brown, so yea permanent doesn't seem to mean permanent.
Too much of a "moneysaver"/tightwad lol to get it done professionally, besides a few of my friends are trained hairdressers (just with very little actual experience hehe), as I've said I don't want to bleach my hair, hate using chemicals that strong on it, I'm going to do a strand test (this week probably) with Wella's Jamacian Rum (cos it has a cool name hehe), assuming that isn't permanent COLOUR of course, otherwise I'll just see what they've got...

Once I've dyed/coloured it, any recommendations what treatments to use on it to keep it healthy? I've never found any of the brand name products to be any better than each other (and the supermarket stuff seems to be rubbish unless you use much more of it, in my experience anyway). At the moment I use Alberto Colour Last (or something like that, basically shampoo/conditioner (separate) for coloured hair, supposedly).
