Gym member DD cancellation question

Hi, I hope I can ask this question here, apologies if it's not suitable. I pay a local sports club a monthly fee through a direct debit conpany. I hadn't trained for months and then lockdown meant I wasn't going to, so I cancelled my DD through my bank without a second thought.
Now the collection company is emailing asking for payment for about 2-3 months of missed fees. Looking at the paperwork (which I should've done sooner I admit) they do specifiy a month's notice and ask you to contact them directly (thecthe company) to cancel. I did contact the club itself a couple of days after cancelling, which in retrospect I should be done sooner, but they certainly didn't advise me tocto through the collection company.
I'm looking for advice as to whether I should just pay it off and eat the cost or try and fight it. The gym by the way has been offering online activities so i can't say that they weren't offering a service at this time.
Thank you.

Pay what's due and use it as a lesson.
Don't cancel DD's just like that.1
