Fraudulent eBay transaction - £900 taken from bank.

Options
On 20th May, Paypal debited my bank account for £900 for an item I am supposed to have bought on Ebay on 15th May.

The first I knew of this was when I happened to check my bank account on 24th May. I didn't receive the usual email from  Ebay notification of the (non-existent) purchase or an email from Paypal of the transaction.

Ebay has confirmed it is a fraudulent transaction but Paypal say that the transaction was 'not unauthorised' and so as far as they are concerned it is case closed.

I have also spoken with my bank (Halifax) who initially promised a refund by today but now say that it is up to Paypal.

Does anyone have any idea if I am able to claim the £900 from anyone?

Also, I am unsure if the direct debit guarantee covers this situation.

Any help most gratefully received.

Cheers

Dave

  • It’s not a direct debit so the guarantee wouldn’t apply.

It looks like you have someone with access to your log in details for paypal and probably your email as well, either through a phishing email that you have responded to- or perhaps someone you know. When paypal denied your claim did they mention anything about the purchase being from your IP address?

What was the £900 payment for, if goods then where were they sent?

I'll leave my response short until (or if) OP comes back with more info . However, OP, if you are still reading this go to the techie board and get instructions for a deep clean on your PC and change all your passwords immediately

  • Hi Soolin

Thank you very much for you reply.

No, Paypal didn't mention the IP address. That is a good point, although I am not sure if I am any further forward with this info?

The £900 is supposed to be for an Apple Mac. The dispatch address on the paypal transaction is our address. Of course, nothing has arrived. I might try and get paypal to issue a refund on that basis (Buyer Protection).

I changed the passwords on ebay and paypal immediately, but thanks for the tip.

By the way, my bank has confirmed the link between paypal and my account is a direct debit.

    Kind regards

    Dave

If something was being sent to you just start an INR claim, but was tracking uploaded at point of purchase?
