Moorcroft Group letter advice please

Hello all, first time poster here.
A couple of weeks ago my partner recieved 2 letters, with 2 seperate reference numbers, from Moorcroft Group saying "We are attempting to contact the above named person regarding a personal matter and we have been provided your address as a possible address for our customer." It goes on to ask her to contact them.
We had never heard of this company so obviously the first thing we do is jump on Google to find out they are debt collectors. Now my partner made some choice financial decisions around 3 - 5 years ago with some pay day loans and credit cards. To our knowledge these were all sorted out and settled. We now share a mortgage together, both have good jobs and are financially in a good place.
So we were surprised to hear from these debt collectors. Upon receiving the letters my partner sent for the 3 credit reports, 2 of which came back fine but we are still waiting on Experian as there was a problem with the pin they sent so we are waiting for a new pin.
From the research I have done on this forum the correct way to proceed would be to send them a "prove it" letter? My question about this is that on the templates I have seen its says "I would point out that I have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to CREDITOR". However the letter doesn't state or give any information at all about who the debts were with or how much they were for, and it's the not knowing that's eating us up a bit.
If anyone could offer some help or guidance it would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Craig

It's always best to post and ask a question specific to your circumstances, which you have now done.
They are not making any allegation (yet) so a prove-it letter is not appropriate.
What you have here is a phishing letter and the correct response is to file it away.
You have now tied together your past addresses with all three credit reference agencies so if you are the person Moorcroft are looking for they will see this and write with a specific allegation.
Then send the prove-it.
Incidentally mse credit club is a free experian service. And the fact hat there's nothing odd on the files may mean that this is either something that does not report, like a utility bill, or it's over six years since it defaulted.1 -
Thanks for the reply.
My only concern with sitting and waiting on this is, is does the debt with Moorcroft grow over time, with interest for example? If not then fine, if so then obviously I would want to get it sorted asap.
Thanks again, Craig0 -
For info.
I’ve had debt collectors trying to get hold of me just to check my address on behalf of Santander (I’d moved and they had some old post returned to sender, even though I’d updated my address). This happened several times even though I had updated my address and already told them my correct address several times. Had no overdue debts or anything.August 2019: £28.8k
November 2020: £0 (0% interest)

On the same page as Fatbelly with this one, they are attempting to trace the owner of the account, they will have written to many with similar details, you do not have to respond to these phishing letters, you only need to do so when a specific demand for payment comes in writing.Debt collectors/debt purchasers, are forbidden from adding charges or interest to simple contract debts, unless the original agreement allows them to do so, most consumer credit act debts do not allow this.Chances are the debt is not even yours, so don`t do anything right now, we have had a few stories over the years where people have responded to these letters and actually paid the debt even though it wasn`t theirs, as they mis-understood the DCA`s very limited powers.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
