I had a Waitrose click and collect today, I assumed it would be pull up, open boot, they’d throw shopping in & I’d drive off, zero contact.

i had to go into the store, customer services, they then directed me across the store to the cafe.  The tables had been removed it it had been turned into a giant collection area.

How are other supermarkets doing click and collect?  Are any contactless outside like I expected?

Our Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose are all inside.
There is no such thing as contactless when someone has picked your shopping for you.

No point doing click'n'collect as it serves no purpose. If you have to go into the store anyway you may as well take a trolley with you and shop as normal.

For both our local Asda and Sainsburys you drive up to the collection point (outside) give them your order details, the goods are delivered to the rear of the car in trays. You then load up and drive away. Normally takes just a few minutes.

Our local Sainsbury's is doing Click and Collect from the far end of the car park, the van is parked there with the orders and you park beside it, show your order and open the boot. Takes 5-10 minutes depending on how badly the packers packed up the van!

The one time I did it for Asda as part of mystery customer experience, I drove to the click n collect canopy, pressed a button and quoted my order number. Then it came delivered by an assistant.

    This was before lockdown.

Morrison's I believe is outside although I haven't tried it, Asda, Sainsburys and Tesco are also outside, you park up in the relevant section eg by the hut and collect the order.

It can be contactless if you quarantine or wipe shopping and clean yourself after.

At my Waitrose you wait by the "exit" and a member of staff asks your name, goes get your shopping and it's brought out bagged up either in a trolly or a moving stack of boxes which you take to the car and return the trolly back to the exhit. Don't go into the store at all. What the OP has to do is crazy and defeats the point of using click and collect under the current restrictions. I'd contact Waitrose head office and complain.
