Strava alternative?

Last time i was out on my bike was 17/May and all was well.
Went on a new route today, saved the ride & then went to check any new segments and as my new route connected to my usual route i went to see who else had been out and about today and where i featured.

Anyone who uses Strava will probably know that i ended up hitting a brick wall. Or rather a subscription only wall. Disappointing.

So on that note what Strava alternatives do you use / are there? I had a look at alternatives actually not all that long ago but the ones I saw seem to be running based which is no good for me as i can't run.

What i liked about Strava was it supported cycling and also the segments where you could see how fast you did a certain segment, how you compared to others for that day, the year, overall and you could also create your own segments.

Does this allow you to select segments and challenge yourself against others in the way that Strava does/did?

For just a simple tracker i'd carry on using Strava as it still records the ride. It was the segments that really made me push myself though rather than the overall ride.

Are you still looking for a bike computer? Garmin connect has some kind of equivalent to strava segments. I’ve never used them, because I use Strava, but I’ve seen they are there. My rides are logged on both Garmin and Strava automatically from my Garmin.
  • To be honest i’d have to weigh up what the situation is as to whether I got a cycle computer.

What i liked was how they upload to Strava and for me at least the segments were a great motivational tool. I’m extremely competitive so on some segments i’d go all out whereas without the whole segment thing i’d have just tootled a long or just gone nowhere near as fast.

What the worst part is I can’t even compete against myself now, never mind others as you have to pay for that privilege also now and for me at least I cannot justify the £50 spend. Yes I know a cycle computer would be more than that but that’s a 1 off. This would be £50 year after year after year for some stats. Each to their own and this isn’t mine.

You say your rides rides are auto logged on Strava from your Garmin. I’m sure I read 3rd party apps no longer work with this change or is that something totally different to what you’re talking about?

I pay for Strava, have done for several years now. My Garmin is an Edge 1000, which connects to my mobile phone. When I start my Garmin it sends my wife a text and she can track me with something called Strava Beacon. She didn’t like me being out of touch for long periods of time, so can log in to see where I am and gets an update on speed etc. The only problem with it is it cuts out after 24 hours and I can’t restart it without ending my ride and starting a new one.

When I get home and click end ride, it all uploads automatically to both Garmin Connect and Strava. I have more data on Garmin Connect because I got my first Garmin before I got my Strava account. I can pick Strava segments as favourites and my Garmin warns me when I’m approaching them and changes from the speed and time screen it normally shows to a map view, with a timer showing if I’m ahead or behind my best time. It’s still uploading ok, despite the update.

This says there are Garmin segments as well as Strava ones.
