Poor credit Iva or not please

I’ve been reading these answers for years but not sure I’m posting correctly , I hope I am. I’m really hoping for some advice about my partner and his credit score . To cut a long story short he spent the entirety of his late teens and early twenties borrowing whatever he could from all sorts of companies , his mental health was extremely poor , and he ignored all of them for years . We’ve been together 3 years now and he’s trying to sort them out , with his sole aim being that we can eventually get a mortgage. He contacted stepchange who advised an IVA , but I’m concerned it could make getting a mortgage much harder , the total of the debt is 7500, so not a huge amount but we are not high earners and don’t have much left after bills .I’d be so grateful for any advice

We're getting a lot of these threads of IVA-pushers masquerading as debt charities.. Stepchange would not have advised an IVA for £7500 - please check who you spoke to and report them.

Your gut instinct is giving you better advice than these chancers. Your partner's debt would have been defaulted when he ignored them in his late teens/early 20s. If that was more than 6 years ago and no-one took court action against him, then they would now:

    (a) have dropped off his file 6 years after the default
    (b) be statute barred 6 years after the default date provided he did not subsequently acknowledge them by payment or in  writing.

So your first job is to check what's on his file and report back. Ignore any score - it's meaningless.

    There are free services from

    Experian - mse credit club
    Equifax - clearscore
    Thransunion - credit Karma
  • That’s so helpful Thankyou , I’m going to pass that on as he was going to go ahead with it tomorrow! Thanks so much . He’s 28 now and on his Experian it’s still showing up 7500 outstanding , including 3 ccj’s. I’ve tried to find answers online about how best to fix the situation but not had much luck ! Would it be ok if I posted the amounts with dates on to show? Thanks again

Debts with judgements are no longer subject to the limitation act, but some of the others may be.
Just out of interest, do you have the link he clicked to talk to who he thought was stepchange ?

  • After speaking to Stepchange, there should have been an email with an orange and purple coloured pfd attachment mailed shortly after putting the phone down.
When I spoke to them last August, my PDF has section 4 Alternative Solutions - IVA & Bankruptcy, an extreme measure suggested for sure, but I did understand why after reading through, because at the time it was the only thing capable of dealing with service charge arrears.
I appreciate ST can only work with what they are told verbally, so what does the online version also suggest:
