Equity rights

I bought my house (mortgage) 19 years ago, met someone had children and a couple of years in he asked to be put on the mortgage, he had a little bit of debt but due to me only working part time I couldn’t get a bigger mortgage so he bought it and had the little bit of equity to pay off his debts on the condition he would put me back on the mortgage, this didn’t happen. We split up he moved away leaving the mortgage in arrears I sorted all that out and have been paying the mortgage even in his name for the past 8 years gained quite a bit of equity, he has always said he didn’t want anything out of the house but has today decided that He wants 50% despite not putting in a penny and leaving with negative equity and bailiffs knocking please help where do I stand
