Has my debt been re-sold?

Hello,

I had some very old debt with Argos for £450 that got sold to ArrowGlobal Ltd who had Moorcroft Debt Recovery Ltd manage my account on Arrow's behalf. I used the 3-stage letter process, asking Moorcroft to provide some evidence which they couldn't so they closed my account. Less than a week later I get a letter from Capquest who apparently are now managing my account on behalf of Arrow chasing the same debt.

Is it normal for debt to get moved around like this? I've not had debt before so I'm not sure if this is normal.

This is not a question of do I pay it or not just looking into the circumstances of multiple agencies being involved.

Yes, its pretty standard for debts to be bounced around like that if a DCA decides to offload an account they are not getting very far with.  That will obviously mean that if you are in some sort of dispute over the legitimacy of the debt, then you will have to keep repeating your request for the 'evidence' you mention.
You say the debt is \very old' - so just how old is it?  Are you hoping that it is statute barred?

Remember not to waste your time with the three letter nonsense.  If you think the debt is unenforceable, one will do the trick just as well and much more effectively.

The 3 letter process you decribe actually only reqiures one letter, and thats the one asking for proof, the rest are mainly irrelivant, and sending them makes you look like you follow bad advice found on freeman of the land type forums, creditors read them as well you know !!

Arrow own your debt, the others are just collectors acting on their behalf, Moorcroft will have returned the account to them as you disputed the debt, they have now passed it to another collector, so its rinse and repeat time.

  • Thank you for your comments, the debt is from 2013. Argos sold it around March 2020.

It's odd that you describe it as a very old debt but Argos didn't sell it till 2 months ago.
What default date is showing on your credit file? Is it showing on your creditfiles?
When did you last make a payment to it?
I presume you sent your three letters recently. Did any of them acknowledge this as your debt?

Edit: I just googled the three letter process and one site is recommending sending a letter that starts (and this is a direct quote:)

Following the receipt of your company’s NOTICE dated __________________, I hereby serve notice that I conditionally accept the alleged debt of [ALLEGED AMOUNT DUE],...

That would be an incredibly stupid way to start a letter on a disputed debt and would constitute acknowledgement.

As mentioned, this is not me asking do I pay the debt or asking for information on the 3-stage letter process, I've seen the many threads of people arguing about it on this forum and I don't wish to engage in those discussions. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question, I really appreciate it. All the best, Daisy.
