Older couple wanting to buy a house

Hi! My husband and I married just over a year ago, and both came into the marriage with debt. We have been really trying hard to pay down those debts, in order to begin saving and buy a home in the next few years. The problem is, he is 56 and I am 48. I worry that we are too old to be given a mortgage, even if we manage to get our credit scores into a good place and save a deposit. To make matters more complicated, I am American (although my husband is British) so I don’t have a credit history here yet and won’t be able to apply for citizenship for several more years. Is there any way to navigate this and get a house? Will we qualify for mortgages despite his age and my non Britishness? We both have good jobs (which so far seem to be safe despite corona)

Your ages only matter for the length of the mortgage. If you are going for a 10 year then can show that will pay off before retire - if going for a 20 year you need to show how you will afford mortgage in retirement.
