Health Insurance for a student wishing to study in America.

Hi,
My name is Callum, I'm currently 17 and living in the UK. I'm looking to study in California, and hopefully stay there after I've graduated. I have Crohn's Disease, and I currently take Inflixmab/Remicade. It's a very expensive treatment, I believe it costs around 2k per infusion, and I have one every 6 weeks. Does anyone know of any insurance options in America that could cover me for a relatively good price, or have an idea of how I should go about this? Please don't leave any comments such as I should stay in the UK etc. It's my dream to move, I visited and fell in love with the place.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You're not going to get anyone to insure you so unless you have particularly rich parents it probably won't happen.

What would you consider to be a "good price", as obviously it's going to cost at least 2k every 6 weeks?

Insurers take on unknown risks. Not risks that are already known.      An employer scheme may well offer cover on their group scheme.

Your medication costs 18,000 a year.  So, even if premiums were offered on an individual basis, it would be more than that.

We all have dreams.   Often commercial reality gets in the way.

When were you wanting to go out to the US ?

The UK Gov have advised against all but essential travel, I dont see you going out to Cali is essential.

A daft question but are you wanting insurance to cover the cost of your medication ?

Why can you not use the same funding you are currently using to pay for the meds when in the US ?

It will currently be covered under the NHS at the moment.
£2000 is the cost of the drugs for an average weight person according to NICE/BNF. I would think US prices would be a lot higher by the time all other treatment costs were included.

Sadly reality is different to dreams.  I wish I could be a premier league footballer but reality is not kind to me

As above you may find employer insurance cover if you work, but given your only studying, very unlikely, but will the place of study cover your medical expenses?

  • Have you been offered a place at a US university? Do they offer a student health insurance policy you could join? As dunstonh mentioned, a group policy would be less harsh on existing conditions. Alternatively, could you study in the UK and find a course that offers a placement/exchange year in US?

As an aside, “Booo!” the negativity from some other posters on this! Special mention to JonesMUFC who has “what goes around, comes around” in their signature and then arrogantly dismisses an honest and genuine question.

Good luck Callum! I hope you make it

Do a Google search for 'health insurance  for study in USA'.  You can then research the websites fir details of cover and exclusions.

I have a feeling that the first time poster might have taken us all for a ride - good story though.
