It's the next PPI scandal waiting to happen.

@lincroft1710 Thank you, yes I understand that Council Tax contributes towards social / housing benefit funding etc, which for our council, is also by far the largest outlay, education fares rather less well; but that's a different matter! The councils receive central government grants in that regards, and are free to divvy it up as they see fit.
As for my own particular gripe, it is the fact that our council is responsible for road maintenance, lighting etc., yet we have been excluded from this by way of developer opt-out, yet receive no 'discount' for those services not being supplied. I agree it is perhaps a tiny proportion of the pot, but it's the principle here.
Regarding the council tax band. As it's a new-build property, we had a code given to us when we moved in 5 months ago. And now we have received an update to that code, lifting it from a C to a H. So someone somewhere at the valuation office, has reviewed this - but not from what I can see, in a way that is fair.
There is no principle involved, CT is a tax. Plenty of people live on unadopted roads and have done for many decades before CT was introduced or live in rural areas without pavements or street lighting, there will be no reduction in their CT payments because of this.

You said your band increased from C to either a G or H, you have said G in one post and H in another.  it is unusual for such an increase not to be accompanied by an explanatory letter. Both these bands would indicate a substantial price paid, possibly £1,000,000 or more. If your purchase price was well below this then clearly there has been a major error somewhere.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Really?  THAT much?

New houses built on a local lane 4 off Semis - Band E - 3 have paid £399,950 circa June to Sep 2019 with the last still to show on LR.
Another 5 large Detached - all rated at Band G in the Council listings: sold for £597,950 July, £579,000 & £599,950 October and 2 still to appear.

My cul-de-sac of 6 detached homes on a private road (not that that fact stops all and sundry from using it as a place to turn around in) are all Band G and were all under £500k when built over 10 years ago and could be, perhaps, up to £600k on a good day?  (As all the youngsters prefer the New Builds).

3 bed 1960s semis near me are worth around £300K and are Band C/D, which indicates a 4 fold increase on 1991 prices. On this basis a house worth £250K in 1991 and clearly Band G, could easily be £1,000,000 now.
