After a few months letters through the post started appearing, and soon enough they had some kind of lawyer acting on their behalf sending intimidating and threatening letters that I had to pay their client etc or they would take me to court. I ignored all these letters.

You told your insurance company there had been an incident, but from the above it appears you didn't tell them when you received a claim against you (which your policy will say you are required to do immediately).

    1. Follow Sourcrates advice to get the judgement set aside
    2. Refer the claim to YOUR insurer so they can start to look into the matter and settle if appropriate. That is what you pay for after all
    3. Do not ignore the judgement - do something about it now or you may find you have a bailiff trying to enforce it

Why did you not: a) forward the correspondence to your insurers, and b) contact the lawyers upon receipt of the first letter and tell them that all future correspondence should go to your insurers?
    Neither are psychic.
