Are we likely to get this default wiped from our report?...

How easy is it to get a company to agree to remove a default from your credit report? We had our Vodafone contracts terminated and eventually marked as having a default against them! What happened is we moved house and tried to change our address with Vodafone over the phone. We were told we had to do this in writing either by post or email.

We changed our address via email and even had a confirmation email a few days later confirming this. Now the issue here is, we were each on the cheapest package available and only took the contract out to upgrade our phones. We never used the Vodafone SIM cards and instead had SIM only plans with another provider. As a result of this, we never got any messages from Vodafone saying we hadn't paid.

The first we knew about this is when we had a letter from a debt collections agency saying they had bought the debt off Vodafone. We were told by them that the accounts were STILL registered at our old address which is why it took them "so long to find us". This is despite the fact that Vodafone acknowledged they had updated it on their systems AND the address in our online account matched our current address but the addresses on our last bills didn't!

Yes maybe we should have noticed that the direct debit hadn't come out for a few months, or maybe we should have put the Vodafone SIM into the phone every now and then. Of course, if Vodafone had have updated the address like we'd asked them too and like they'd told us they had, then we wouldn't have had this problem as we'd have got a letter long before any termination or defaults occurred.

Given the above, how likely do you think it is that I'll be able to get Vodafone to get the defaults waived off? I still have the emails confirming I'd changed the address with them as well as the correspondence from the debt collectors saying that my address with Vodafone was incorrect?

Are you wanting the default removed by paying the outstanding amount or do you want the debt amount and the default removed?
    • All land is owned. If you are not on yours, you are on someone else's
    • When on someone else's be it a road, a pavement, a right of way or a property there are rules. Don't assume there are none.
    • "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere

It's your responsibility to ensure payments are kept up with, I don't see why they'd remove the default as it's an accurate reflection of what has happened. Are you implying the direct debit had somehow been cancelled along the line that you weren't informed about also? As I'm failing to understand how/why your address changing would of had any affect on your direct debit being taken and payment being made on time. I guess there's no harm in you sending off a complaint but I wouldn't have thought it likely to get the default removed. Let us know how you get on

Forgot to add, have you paid the debt off now or is there still money owing?

From what you’ve said I’d say it’s worth asking but there are a couple of things here that don’t quite add up:
    1) Why was the DD cancelled? Surely only you can do that?
    2) Why would you take a contract out with a provider and use another providers sim? Doesn’t seem a cost-effective way of doing things.

I haven’t had a paper bill in years and I’ve been with Vodafone in the recent past as well.
