Old 'Better Energy' debt resurfaced after 10 months 700% increased!

Hi all,
I received a letter from CCS collections last Thursday stating that I owed £280.00 from an energy account I had from an old Better Energy account (now PFP energy) from when I changed suppliers from them about 10 months ago.
I had totally forgot about the original amount (around £40) that I owed Better Energy after I had changed suppliers, but it does not change the fact that they have increased the debt seven-fold without informing me of such a steep increase beforehand?
Where do I stand in this respect please? I have, of course, contacted both parties, with PFP currently collating a database of everyone who received CCS letters last week before they come to a 'resolution'.
