Employer offering Apprenticeship - stick or twist?

Hello,

Just a quick question.

I work for a big company with the MOD as our biggest customer. I’m currently on a secondment role lasting till end of June, to which I will return to my original permanent position within the company which I want to avoid going back to as I didn’t enjoy the role.

My employer has offered me an Apprenticeship scheme in Level 4 Supply Chain which I like the sound of and I wouldn’t take a drop in salary, however, the duration of the apprenticeship is three years by which time I’ll be 27.

I’ll be looking to move out of my parents house within the next few years, do you think being an apprentice will have an effect when it comes to buying a home for the first time? Am I best looking for a different permanent position elsewhere within the company rather than the Apprenticeship scheme?

Many Thanks,

James.

The level 4 I would assume refers to CIPS level 4, so will give you a foot on the ladder in purchasing, perhaps you could take a long term view.will you want to be doing this in 20 years or would progressing in your current discipline be better? Do you want to stay with your employer for a number of years?

"apprentice" is just a way of funding the learning. If you think the qualification is interesting, and the employer is willing to invest the time in you, I'd bite their hand off. I have MBA level apprentices.

27....positively ancient! You've got upwards of another 40 years in the workplace, so equipping yourself to get the best and most enjoyable career you can sounds like a good idea.

As to buying a property, the fact you are an apprentice doesn't matter. Your earnings and the amount of any deposit you can raise will be what interests a mortgage lender, and if they see a clear training programme/career progression and thus likely salary increases, you'll be a more attractive applicant.
