Fireflyaway - the £500 left over shocked us too! It makes sense with some things - like no petrol for two months and no monthly bus pass needed - but there are definitely things that I can cut back on. It has definitely inspired us to look even more seriously at our outgoings.

CreditCardJunkie - thanks for the note about maternity allowance, I had never even heard of it! I always thought you had to work for 12 months in the same job to get any help at all, so that's really useful. The company I'm hoping to join (they're sending over a written offer this week) is quite small so I wouldn't want to mess them around too much, but at the end of the day family is more important than employers! 

Thanks again everyone - it has been so reassuring to hear all of your thoughts - I really thought that everyone would tell me that I was being stupid and reckless and  to wait to have a baby until I was debt free, so I really appreciate everyone's kind and helpful words.
