You know a user name doesn't mean anything, right?TELLIT01 said:My wife can't wait to get back to working from the office, with maybe the occasional day working from home. She is really struggling with the lack of interaction with her colleagues. As to when that will happen, nobody yet knows. She works in a large, predominantly open plan office so I suspect it might be some time.Just to add, I think it's a bit rich for somebody with a username such as 'jobbingmusician' to be saying everybody else should work from home. As for the figure of 95% working from home! 1.5 million in the NHS (excluding indirect workers), over 3 million in construction, over 4 million in hospitality, add those involved in the delivery chain from drivers to supermarkets...
I mean, I am not actually a Pickledonionspaceraider.
Your wife needs to reassess her priorities if she is desperate to get back to her desk job so she can hang with her work colleagues....I find that laughable. I would have thought nurturing relationships with family and chosen friends, was far more important.
I agree that it would be ideal for many jobs to work from home. There is literally no need to drive to an office every day. That is so 1950's. The technological age has changed things beyond comprehension yet thus far, we have not really cashed in on that cheque.
It would be so much better for the community and environment, and for many, mental health. It would cost each employee less in terms of time and money, we could get more sleep, eat better, exercise better.
You get more choice about who you spend your precious time alive with......I would rather spend extra time (made back by not commuting) with my family and chosen friends, than my work colleagues....But each to their ownWith love, POSR

I couldn't give a **** what you find laughable. She enjoys her job, and the people she works with. She also spends a lot of time with family. The two elements are not mutually exclusive.

You spend most of your waking life there if you work full time.
But back on topic, with many the reason why a lot of companies do not like homeworking is they find that to begin with it goes great, the employee happy, probably working longer hours to catch up on things when they have a break during day to go shopping meet friends or whatever, then after a bit the work output generally decreases. Quite a few posts on here from people who got sent to work at home at start of the virus are now being called back. The main reason for that will be the job is not getting done. After all if it worked companies would love it can decrease on premises etc., so save money. But yes granted there is some micro-mangers who think if they can't see somebody they are doing no work.

Was there Internet and the capacity to work from home and not the office in the 1960's?pickledonionspaceraider said:There is literally no need to drive to an office every day. That is so 1950's. But working from home does not mean nurturing home relationships? You are at work, just at home.pickledonionspaceraider said:

I don't even have lunch the same time as my husband and he's working longer hours than when hes in the office.
As for finding it 'laughable' that people want interaction whilst at work with colleagues, many many people need that. And empathy at this time is a great thing to have. Some people are really struggling and it won't help to read you consider things laughable that they may see as a life line.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I’ll work from home more but still want to go into the office. For one thing it will be bad for the economy if cities become deserted as everyone is working from home. The restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, bars etc. need to survive once this is over.1

I’ve got to say my hubby is really struggling with working from home. It’s not something that’s ever appealed to him as he likes to keep work and home completely separate.
It’s hard trying to keep the kids quiet during the many phone calls he makes even though we are in separate rooms. Many of my friends are finding it hard to juggle the children around their other responsibilities and are becoming increasingly stressed right now, so it’s not always as straightforward as people think.0 -
I enjoy the office environment and I'm missing it at the moment. My work can get quite technical at times so it's good to bounce ideas off colleagues. Also because of the commute, i would get there early and leave late possibly doing an extra 30-45 minutes work a day whereas now I'm pretty much strictly 9-5 because I don't have that commute to worry about.

Based on the news reports it sounds like if you are office based and can work from home that you’ll be working from home for the next three months at least!0
