Re-freezing mince once cooked

I bought 2kg of yellow sticker beef mince, divided it into portions and froze them.  I have made a large chilli, thinking it will do us for two days but I think it will stretch to three meals.  Can I freeze this even though the mince has been previously frozen?

    Massive, categorical YES
I've heard someone on TV recently saying you shouldn't, I was shouting on the TV
My grandma,my mother, my father (who is a chef) fed us meat defrosted, cooked and frozen cooked all our lives and I would have to see some damning scientific evidence to stop doing it myself

    Hi Clareski,

Yes you can re freeze previously frozen raw mince after it has been cooked.  I do exactly what you are suggesting all the time.  Just defrost it thoroughly before reheating.

  • Brilliant, thanks both!!
  • Chilli that last three days. Impossible! Get a grip, get it eaten.

If you cannot eat it, please freeze it!

What bozo said you couldn't/shouldn't freeze cooked mince after you'd previously frozen it raw?
I usually buy raw mince in bulk, portion it out and freeze it raw.
I get it out when I want to use it, batch cook and refreeze it.
My freezer is full of bolognaise, chilli and various shepherds pie bases.

    Refreezing meat and fish

Never refreeze raw meat (including poultry) or fish that has been defrosted.

You can cook frozen meat and fish once defrosted, and then refreeze them.

This was where I was getting confused.  That makes perfect sense - thank you!!
