Furloughed case

After 14 years service a contact was furloughed 5 weeks ago, only him and 1 other out 6 employees (paye)
He is owed 5 weeks wages but his boss is not saying if or when he will get paid and claims his accountant is closed and they would have to sort it as and when.
What can he do?

You have to agree to furlough.
that aside, it's as simple as paying anyone else. The money is then reclaimed0 -

Whilst obviously he is entitled to be paid on time, the problem is that any legal remedy will take ages to resolve.
So he needs to make a judgement about the employer's good intentions (or otherwise) and their actually ability to pay. There is a danger that if he "goes legal" the employer will dig their heels in and string him along.
If he is suffering a quantifiable loss as a result he is entitled to ask the employer to reimburse him or he could add that to any claim. Like any such dispute he has a duty to minimise any losses as far as reasonably possible. e.g using savings before incurring overdraft charges and where possible arranging an overdraft rather than having to pay unauthorised charges.
