Unexpected double payment shortly after remortgage

Options
Hi. We have recently remortgaged for the first time, completing on 9th April. We were due originally to complete on 1st April but our previous mortgage lender didn't send through the necessary paperwork on time. We asked our broker upon completion whether he knew when the first payment to our new lender was due to be made. He said he didn't know and that we would get paperwork from the mortgage lender with that information. They did write to us eventually and stated that on 24th they would take £157, this was listed as 'first payment' and it stated this was interest. It then said 'usual payment' to be taken on 1st May and that that was the £459 monthly payment, which is the monthly payment amount we agreed to. Then in 24th they didn't just take £157 they took £616! We assumed they'd taken both together and called just to check, especially since the letter they sent clearly stated they were taking £157 on 24th, nothing more. We were told that this was how it worked! That our broker should have told us we needed to make a full month's pay within 2 weeks of completion and that we would still need to pay yet another £459 on 1st may, a week later! So they say it is perfectly normal to expect a double payment within weeks of completion and that, even though they wrote and said £157 on 24th, it was normal to not tell us and to take a large sum without warning! This extra payment of £459 has has now left us with no money. Any advice would be appreciated.

Urgently review your budget for the coming month to free up funds.

Does 'no money' mean nothing left over, or not enough for the essentials?
  • We are more querying whether it's acceptable to take such a large amount, without even telling us.

We have funds. We are just wanting to know where we stand as the letter they sent basically said the first payment on the 24th would be £157... But they took more than was stated on the letter for a first payment.
