Owe tax

Last April I got a letter saying I owe £207 in tax for tax year 2018-19 as I’ve underpaid I think because I started a new job in January 2019. As a result of this, my tax code would change to reclaim this which happened.
Today, I’ve come home to a letter saying I owe this same amount for tax year 2018-19 and need to pay.
Is this normal? I will try and speak to HMRC but it’s tough with Covid.

  • No but not unheard of.

If you were originally notified last April then they usually wouldn't start deducting the extra tax until now,April first pay after 5 April 2020 (through to the end of the 2020:21 tax year).

Was the notification a P800 calculation?

What is your tax code for 2020:21?

I think it’s a P800. It just striked me odd that I got two letters with the same amount.

    My current code is 1187L

  • Might be worth checking the make up of your tax code on your Personal Tax Account.

1187L could include a deduction to collect the £207 not necessarily.
