I generally do apple podcasts- you do not need an apple device to listen to them, just download itunes to your PC or tablet and listen from there.
Does anyone know if you need a BBC license to (legally) hear the BBC Sounds stuff?

Licensing fees only apply to BBC visual media (i.e. live television, on-demand streaming), so if you haven't paid the fee, you're still fine to listen to BBC Sounds without any fear of the licensing people coming and kicking down your door!  ;)

Here it is in published form from the BBC itself: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/help/questions/about-bbc-sounds-and-our-policies/radio-tv-licence

BookBub do free/99p books. I also took out a Kindle Unlimited subscription (£7.99 a month) but I can read as many books as I like. Considering I can easily spend that amount on one or two books, its worth it for me.

If you are after free audiobooks, and can't find the one you want via your local library's website, Libervox has thousands of classic books read by volunteers.  (Nothing is funnier than driving down the M1, passing the signpost to Warwick and listening to an American mispronounce Warwickshire at exactly the same time.)

For podcasts, I listen via Apple Podcasts.  (Before I had an iPhone, I used iTunes to download them all.)   Most of my podcasts are from the BBC but I find BBC Sounds to be much more buggy than Apple Podcasts.  You do have to wait a bit for some podcast series to be released to iTunes and some BBC shows never transition.  (Simon Evans Goes To Market is one that hasn't.)

Most of my ebooks were sourced free via BookBub.  I read them via the Kindle app on my phone or on my iPad.  While I love dead-tree books, the Kindle app is a godsend since it puts a library in the palm of my hand.  When I commuted into London 20 years ago, I always had to carry two books with me.  Not now.

Besides Kindle Unlimited and Project Gutenberg as mentioned previously, how about livraries and charity shops ?

For ebooks/audiobooks and podcasts your local library can have a good choice - just search for your library in Google and they will have a range of online services.

For Podcasts, the BBC Sounds app is quite good but I also use Podbean and Stitcher in the past on Android which allows you to listen to a range of podcasts.
