Clarity on first rest day working a Day/Night Shift Pattern

Hi Team MSE,
I have this week moved onto a 2 Day (0800 - 2000) / 2 Night (2000 - 0800) shift pattern, followed by 4 days off.
Day 1 (0800 - 2000)
Day 2 (0800 - 2000)
Day 3 (2000 - 0800)
Day 4 (2000 - 0800)
My last night shift carries on into Day 5 (8 hours). Is this classified as a Working Day or is this my first Rest Day?
As per the shifts assigned to me, day 5 is classed as a Rest Day which I disagree with. Before I contact management (who have been non-existent / poor) I would appreciate some clarity.

So, are you trying to argue that it is a 9 day cycle?
Your shift system is a common system and day 5 is considered your first day off.1 -

I just finished Thursday night shift. My end of shift report at 5am on the 10th was dated the 9th because I am working a Thursday shift and Thursday was the 9th. The morning shift that started at 3.30 am were dating their paperwork as the 10th, 90 minutes before I dated my paperwork the 9th because they are working a Friday the 10th shift.
Its the day the shift Starts on that counts. Anything based on shifts is dated for the day the shift starts whilst anything worked on a 24 hour cycle is dated for the actual date and time. Its been like that everywhere I've ever worked.
So what day counts as a bank holiday. Well that's contractual. The older contracts (like mine) count Thursday night as a bank holiday worked because I work into Good Friday BUT the newer contracts count Friday night as a bank holiday because its the day the shift starts on. Its really down to your employer as to what system they use and every weird and wonderful system you can think of exists somewhere.
The same applies to additional pay. When double time is paid is down to individual companies policies/contracts. Some are paid for a specific shift whilst others are paid between say midnight to midnight (so split over 2 shifts for some, or only partial double time for others if the don't work both shifts).
Nights is pretty pants really, but the money is good.
