My son works across border, just got furloughed last week, now finds his company can't claim the new payment in RoI as he lives in NI, can he claim the UK 80% payment up to £2500, or is he only going to get universal credit, if so, it seems very unfair, thanks

RoI schemes don't seem to cover cross border workers.
    http://www.eurescrossborder.eu/covid-19-cross-border-workers indicates his route

Thanks for that, turns out he's shafted anyways, furloughing Only applies if ALL employees furloughed at once  or business turnover reduced by 70%, turns only 2 of them told not to come in as the rest can work from home.

    Unfair as ever.

Noting the last paragraph, the RoI is happy to recieve your tax, take your NI equivalent contribution, but in the biggest crisis of the last 80 years, they decide to discriminate against one vulnerable group, hardly lives up to Leo's claim of never leaving any Irish citizen behind again!

Why would the UK government effectively pay Irish companies to retain staff?

Thanks for your concern, empathy and support northernJoe. Governments making discriminatory decisions at a time of international crisis is unforgiveable...... his partner was also laid off, they have a 1 year old child.

    In this together?

No is the answer to that one.

The UK furloughing scheme is open to N.Ireland based businesses that employ staff (cross-border workers) with addresses in the Republic of Ireland.

The Irish government have not reciprocated

Not correct, if furloughed on either side of border you can avail of that type  payment, just not the COVID-19 benefit.
