Self-assessment - date I did the work, date I invoiced or date of payment?

Hi all. I am new to this self-assessment malarky. I am going to make a start on my return for 2019/2020 but am not sure when to include work, is it the date I did it, the date I invoiced or the date I was paid? Any advice and tips gratefully received.
