Could anyone advise the best site for getting an accurate valuation for my car? I have tried a few but there is a huge variation between their valuations and they don't allow for much detail re condition (I have a car that could be valued a little in excess of £1k but damage and faults mean it's worth very little).

have you tried parkers ? I think the OR uses Glass's. If it's not much over £1k in good condition and you can demonstrate the faults(mot advisories) I doubt you'll have much of an issue. Webuyanycar I believe lets you specify faults and damage, and that puts their prices well down. Another option is to ask your usual garage to provide a written valuation (if they buy and sell cars), just are sure its an honest one(is not inflated because it's for trade in, or deflated to point of being silly because it's for bankruptcy)

Worth remembering that even if your car is worth less than £1k there's no guarantee that you can keep it, you need to convince the OR that you have a genuine need of it eg for travel to work which wouldn't be feasible using public transport.
