Hi can someone advise if you can do part time work elsewhere if you've been furloughed by previous employer?

If they are your previous employer you are not currently employed by them. Absolutely no reason why you can't do work elsewhere.emzie13 said:Hi can someone advise if you can do part time work elsewhere if you've been furloughed by previous employer?

I think the main issue which someone else mentioned is that when you’re furloughed you are still an employee of your company so they can ask you to return to work with no notice. If you take another job with someone else and have a contract then you can’t just not turn up as your previous employer wants you back.My company has furloughed a few people in the last week and they’ve all been told they can’t work for anyone else during the period of furlough. I’m not sure of the legalities of this but it seems like a standard contract that I assume most people who are furloughed have to sign.1

Interesting one. If they're zero hours then it wouldn't enforceable, in theory. If full time then probably yes. If part time presumably you could take up another job but maybe not during your normal working hours?JReacher1 said:I think the main issue which someone else mentioned is that when you’re furloughed you are still an employee of your company so they can ask you to return to work with no notice. If you take another job with someone else and have a contract then you can’t just not turn up as your previous employer wants you back.My company has furloughed a few people in the last week and they’ve all been told they can’t work for anyone else during the period of furlough. We need more clarity as you say. Apparently going to come in a few days.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse1 -
I think it really depends if you have a clause in your contract about working for other companies. If you don't it is difficult to see how companies could stop you working on furlough (for someone else). Given also that the minimum furlough period is 3 weeks suggests companies may have issues trying to get people back sooner - and it would be reasonable for an employee (IMO) to state they weren't available as they had to seek other work to top up their potentially reduced salary, but would be available upon furlough end.JReacher1 said:I think the main issue which someone else mentioned is that when you’re furloughed you are still an employee of your company so they can ask you to return to work with no notice. If you take another job with someone else and have a contract then you can’t just not turn up as your previous employer wants you back.My company has furloughed a few people in the last week and they’ve all been told they can’t work for anyone else during the period of furlough.
