Me and the OH have been to county court today in an effort to get our deposit back from the last place we rented.
We spent months gathering statements and preparing our case so was a little bit annoying when the judge accepted evidence from the claimant on the day, when we had been told all evidence must be handed in 14 days before the case.
BUT we got £300 back from a £850 deposit and all costs - which the defendant disputed to no avail - totalling £505.
Now we have our own place I guess we'll never have to go through that again, and we went in with nowt and came out with £500.
Came home to a lovely slow cooker full of pork in a white wine sauce and homemade cheesecake.
Sold loadsa pre-loved crap on ebay and packaged it all up using pre-loved envelopes.
Oh, and all my Avon stuff came from the fab deal that was on this 'ere board.
Tons of stocking fillers and a lil something for me, just £9

Well done. Sounds like a super day you have had. The pork sounds nice as well. Going to have to have my dinner now. Working nights sends your body clock all over the place

Thanks.
I'm in court a lot with my job, so luckily the surroundings and procedure don't freak me as much as they could.
TBH I nearly bowed and called the judge Your Honour before I checked myself.

There was some water damage in the main bathroom, which was caused by one of our housemates but sadly it was a joint tenancy.DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
Sounds like a pretty good day - hope it gives you the momentum to have another fab one today!!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0

Well done
A friend of mine is going through a similar situation with her ex-landlord and I know she's dreading going to court. He's a real pig-claiming she trashed the flat (using photos of the flat after it was previously vacated by an alcoholic tenant and had to be gutted and redecorated) that are 5 years old. He gave her notice after enviromental health gave him a list as long of your arm of things he needed to put right. Hopefully the judge will see through his lies but who knows

If you want any hints or tips drop me a PM.
My advice is go in there with as much info as possible, with dates, and tons of witness statements from anyone who can back up her case.
Landlord's photos should electronically dated otherwise I would just argue - as we did - they could have been taken at any point in the house's history.
A statement from EH would help no end.
It isn't as formal as a criminal court, you just have to turn up looking smart and call the judge sir/madam.
They are used to people being unrepresented and so take the legal process quite slowly.
Tell her to take a pad, make loadsa notes when the landlord is talking them challenge him on owt that she disputes.
Prepare opening and closing statements a few pars, look the judge in the eye and smile.
It's not as bad as you might imagine.Well done
