BTW, There are some great template letters on here which basically tell your creditors not to phone you and that they must put everything in writing. Just stopping the phone calls will reduce the stress big time.
  • More people than will admit have had that sinking feeling and have been threatened by Debt Collectors. They have targets to reach and no conscience. I was sworn at and told I was stupid only a month ago. My son has seen been crying in the corner of the room. Not anymore, Payplan was my saviour.

You need to get your sanity back and your confidence. They cannot take your life, they cannot take your integrity. You are also not alone. I have just found out I am moving in 10 days! Heck knows where I will find the money, but hey as long as I am well and my family are well, I can stick my couch on my back if I have to. Find your inner strength.

  • Debt collectors have little power though, unlike Balliffs??

Debt collectors have no power. Zero, zilch, nada, rien.

If you have trouble getting hold of CAB or making an appointment with them, call one of the other advice organisations in my signature below.

While they work only over the phone, they are often more expert than the majority of CAB advisor's.

(and before anyone says, yes their are many very good finance/debt advisor's that work for CAB)

don't phone the debt collectors phone BT direct and make the payment arrangement with them. Better still write to them offering £1 token payment. You don't have to offer more than you can afford, and if you have had some lean weeks you may need that £20 to pay token payments to other debts

Hi velocity - I've only just seen your thread. I think that this disgusting and threatening behaviour towards you, by the thugs at Moorcroft, should be reported to the Trading Standards Office as it is in direct and total contravention of the OFT Debt Collection Guidelines:

    http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/consumer_credit/oft664.pdf

Any visit that these obnoxious turds wish to make must be by mutual agreement, other than a 'preliminary' visit - if required - to ensure that you are actually the 'alleged debtor'.
In the unlikely event that these social misfits do visit you, it is important to remember that they have NO RIGHT OF ENTRY into your property, and have NO LEGAL POWERS WHATSOEVER - all they can do is ask you if you wish to pay or make an agreement to pay,
Equally, they MUST leave your property IMMEDIATELY when you ask them to.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Any chance of reporting a reduction to tax credits and having it increased?
