Hi my mortgage is with first owned by rbs. I have tried ringing about payment holiday for days sometimes 2 hrs on phone with no joy. So I rang first active and told them my situation. She said have you applied. I said yes online form. But her advice to me was cancel your direct debit (so I did) then ring them and explain when things calm down. I said am I ok doing that and I won't get in trouble for it she said no. Now a person from a bank as told me to do this. Does anybody think that this is ok and that I won't get any comeback on this when I was told to do it

It will rather depend on whether your lender received your request and granted it. If they have then there is no problem. If they haven't then they'll go through their standard process of a missed payment and you'll have to complain and tell them who you spoke to and when & give evidence of requesting a payment holiday and why you reasonably believe one was granted.
I'm confused who you spoke to. You can only expect to be able to complain about being penalized by your lender for actions taken under the advice of your lender. Your concern suggests that this isn't the case?
I would only cancel the Direct Debit if the consequence of missing a payment is less than if they refuse your payment holiday. If they grant a payment holiday but still take a payment, then you can get it refunded the same day anyway.
