To mortgage or not

Options
Currently, me and my OH live in a 3 bedroom semi with large conservatory and side extension.  Within the next few weeks, our last child will b moving out.  My OH and I sleep in separate bedrooms due to my snoring.  Our attached neighbours have 3 young children under 5, who are very noisy.  I don't mind general children noise but I am sick of hearing her about at them, usually when her OH  is out.  We have never had it this bad, you can hear every word she shouts including swearing.  We are wanting to sell and move into a detached.  We have looked at several properties.  Our current house has a new bathroom  fitted wardrobes in main bedrooms, lots of room.  Only thing it needs is a new kitchen.  We have seen a 4 bed detached but would need a small mortgage of about 50k nd no fitted wardrobes, close to amenities, ideal as we are getting older.  We could scooter to everywhere.  Seen several 3 bed detached but no wardrobes and need money spending to bring up to date.  Needs new kitchen, new wardrobes, bathroom alterations to name a few but no mortgage.  I have shares but these have lost value and I am unwilling to sell at present.  Before CV19 crash, they were worth £55k so this could pay mortgage off in the future.  I would have to have mortgage alone, my OH cannot go on mortgage due to recent self employment.  Also, no life cover for husband due to health issues.  We have been mortgage free for at least 8 years now.  Any advice much appreciated, thanks

  • Depending on how long OH has been self employed for; there are providers who will accept his income.
Your LTV would be very low, so it is probably worth it. Mortgage rates are really low at the moment but Covid 19 is causing a lot of fear in the market right now.
I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it

Is now the time to think about moving. Probably not. You've time to save some money though to pay for the work that you would wish to do to the new property.
