Coronavirus £10,000 grant

Anyone shed some light on what help we will get, me and my business partner have literally just sent of our signed contract for new salon to open in my local town. As it’s not up and running and open, would we be accepted for the grant they are offering for small business??

  • I am also seeking advice on this - I have read the online guidance and it appears it only applies to businesses who pay business rates and qualify for the reduced amount. I am in the construction business and the only premises I have to use for my business is a bedroom in my house turned into an office which I have been advised does not need to pay business rates. I could really do with the grant as I have already had worked cancelled totalling approx £30k in turnover. So is there a way for me to claim?

As far as I am aware it's purely based on business rates for certain sectors

you have seen the guidance, just the same as the rest of us have. You understood what you read, so clearly it does NOT apply to you since you do not have a rateable property in your business and therefore are not entitled to the grant.
Obviously the Govt is still finding its way around what it can (or wants to) do to help small "business"- which of course comes in may guises, and they have only scratched the surface at the moment. All those self employed service businesses that do not operate out of fixed premises are clearly not covered as yet - whether that will change remains to be seen.

I suspect they have started with those businesses who are most likely to be in "immediate" financial difficulty as they have the fixed overhead of property costs to pay on top of any income they need for themselves.

It's for existing businesses, in business premises, paying business rates to the local Council:

There will be a £10,000 cash grant to our smallest businesses, delivered by local authorities. Small businesses that pay little or no business rates and are eligible for small business rate relief (SBBR) or rural rate relief will be contacted by their local authority - they do not need to apply. The funding will be provided to local authorities in early April. Guidance for local authorities on the scheme will be provided shortly.

What about self storage sites (office + storage units) that are used solely for business purposes? They are liable for business rates and the owner of the site pays it directly to the local authority. These costs are then passed on to us in our rent.  Would we be eligible for this grant as the space we occupy is below the rateable value threshold of £15,000?
