i add half boiled water to half cold water and i end up with huge loaves.
but my bm is between the cooker and the microwave so that might have some thing to do with it.
also you should try doves yeast 99p a pack in tesco and lasts ages in the fridge.

Being fed up with dodgy loaves on the Panasonc's quick bake cycle using Allinson or Hovis white strong bread flour, out of curiosity, today at Mr. T's, I bought a pack of Carr's Breadmaker strong white flour. (£1.19 for 1.5kg  but still slightly cheaper than the Allinsons). I used my usual recipe but with about 20 ml less water.

Result?

A loaf like I used to get! :T

It just HAS to be the flour batches. All I need now is for Allinson's to explain the difference. Needless to say, I'll be back to Mr T's tomorrow to buy up their remaining stock of Carr's!

I have recently had a problem where my bread is cracking on the top (like a little cap on the bread) which makes me think it's rising too much. I've never had this problem before and I'm not doing anything different ( I think:confused: ) Any ideas please?
• I also had problems with my Panasonic, but I now use a bread mix from Morrisons (victoria foods) all I have to do is add warm water (half boiled half cold) and they turn out really nice.

Its on offer at our local Morrisons at 2 for 79p, 1 bag makes 1 loaf.
:p PinkPunkBird :p

I've also been having terrible problems with my bread - could hammer in nails with it. Even though I followed the recipe completely. I've not managed to get a really great loaf yet - I've given up with it and started buying bread again. But I really miss the house smelling of bread. Any ideas for a foolproof loaf to convince me not to give up? I shall try reducing the water first and experiment a bit I think.

Hooray, I'm not going mad after all! I've been having flat loaves from my Panasonic for a few weeks now - ever since the cold snap before Christmas actually. What a coincidence. So glad to have found this thread. For the record, my flour, in order of preference, is Carrs, (can't find it locally any more,) Lidl white, Tesco white & wholemeal are bottom of the pile. An 80/20 white/wholemeal mix has been fine for the lifetimes of 3 bm's, apart from the occasional blip.
Moved the bm into the warmer kitchen today, but it didn't help. I always use warm water, but next time I'll try less of it, plus warmed flour.

Does anyone know who DOES stock Carrs now? Apparently you can email them to find out local stockists - caroline.dale@carrs-flourmills.co.uk

Happy New Year everyone.

I think you might have hit the nail on the head about the temperature as I bought a new Panny from Amazon on special offer. I have been using a Morphy Richards fastbake and would have stuck with that but was tempted by the offer and had some wedding money left so....

The first loaf I baked in the Panny was a brick! What a disappointment!

As I wasn't sure whether it was me being a first-timer or the ingredients, I tried again and loaded up the Panny again and the MR using the same flour, yeast etc and both were fine.

I can only think that the heating was on last nght when I made my joint efforts, whereas it was a cold day and my kitchen is north facing when I originally attempted my Panny loaf!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
