I can’t make porridge! Help!

By porridge, I don’t mean flakes/quick cook porridge, but jumbo rolled oats - I have tried microwave and in a pan and followed the packet instructions religiously but the oats stay chewy. I have tried soaking overnight and then cooking in the morning also. Anyone got any failsafe tips please?

I cook them on hob, in a saucepan. I would use for example one mug/cup of oats, one mug /cup of water and one mug/cup of milk. So one lot of oats two of liquid, dependent on how many for. You can let them sit overnight but I just bring to boil stirring. Never made a lumpy porridge yet this way..

That’s exactly what I do – but they oats stay still chewy - what brand do you use?

Absolutely any porridge oats. Have used cheap value ones, lidl cheap, think I've got quaker oats at the moment. I've been making it for years, mum was Scottish but I don't think that particularly helped or hindered, that was the way she did them so I just carried on! Are you definitely using the 1 oats to 2 liquid, I think if you don't quite do that goodness knows?!

OP - perhaps you have bought a dodgy batch of oats?

Repurpose them for flapjacks, they sound ideal.
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.

Are you cooking them too quick?

Now its been a long time since I cooked porridge on a hob, but I can remember it was a long slow cook on just a simmer

Actually I remember me mum boiling her curlers and getting them in whilst waiting for the porridge
  • I love my porridge every morning but I can't stand the jumbo oats.
I just use Lidl Scottish oats around 89p for the box and they make delicious porridge.
I use one part oats to one part milk and one part water, leave them half an hour to soak and then cook for around 5  mins till nice and creamy.
I always used Scotts or Quaker oats till I tried the Lidl ones which are half the price for a box and I've never went back they work for me.

Sometimes it's only jumbo oats that I can get my hands on, so I blitz them a bit in the food processor, and that seems to do the trick for making porridge.

Why don’t you like jumbo oats - because they don’t cook well??!

I love the jumbo oats (I prefer Scott's Original Old Fashioned), but they do need cooking for a bit, on a very low heat. But then, I also like a bit of chew in my rolled oat porridge. Porridge made with oatmeal is a different beast, and there it has to be smooth. I know, I'm strange!
