This is not true - the Government's attempt to ban passive radar and laser detectors through the (so-called) Road Safety Bill was derailed by the last election, and as far as I am aware they have made no attempt to put this back on the statute book yet.

Passive radar and laser detectors are perfectly legal to buy, sell, own and use in the U.K.!

(Sorry for getting on my high horse, but there has been a lot of misinformation spread about this topic!!)

Im a driver myself, and think yeah this could be a good item , however i find a shop such as woolworths selling this item, very irresponsible, a company that are focused on kids selling something that will provoke speeding up between camera locations, as its basically pointing out where you wont get caught, and cashing in on what could cause more accidents in my opinion is very irresponsible.

If you see my point

In the true spirit of MSE I can suggest one way for people considering this item to save £79.99.
Try driving within the speed limits!

Not bad IMHO, £80ish for a GPS receiver/ "safety camera locator", that can also be used with a PDA and maybe a suitable phone (SPV? etc ), enabling them to become cheapish Satnav devices ( that is with added software, of course).

£25, a year (second year onwards) is not steep for full internet updates, and it does include the major European countries speed cam locations.

This is not entirely true in that the Bill will, to all intents and purposes, be reintroduced during the current session of Parliament and was included in the Queen's Speech 17 May 2005. You will find the reference about half way down the speech and it says:

“Legislation will be brought forward to help reduce casualties on the roads.”

As I understand it the Bill will be the same as that which ran out of time in the last Parliament, although reports now suggest that the sliding scale of points (fewer for minor infractions and more for extreme excesses) on licences for speeding offences is not certain of recieveing support.
  • I need to look in to this as I was caught by a mobile camera a few weeks ago
If you live in Lancashire I think you would agree with me that its beyond a joke I pass 3 fixed on a 12 mile Journey & several times a week there is a mobile one - look out in penwortham & hutton

    Thanks for the info

If you want to know where the cameras are why not just vist National Safety Cameras . This is the oficial site that gives the locations of all the fixed cameras, as well as information on where the mobile cameras will be located on a weekly basis. It links to each Camera Safety Partnership's site. There are still a few areas not in the Partnership but you should still, with a bit of intuition, be able to track down where the cameras are in those areas too.

A bit more time consuming than an electronic gizmo but just as effective and you get a lot more warning!!!

    Bazzb,

Your link to dot list of camers sites is dated June 2004, hardly up to date.

Thanks anyway, in West Yorkshire alone to quote,

"The tables published reveal that for 743 locations, casualties increased rather than decreased.",

so is this a Safety or Revenue issue? Even the highly paid Kwango "experts" dont seem to bothered about getting it right.

Sorry I would rather pay £80 to protect my licence, I DO drive safely, (no points), but speed limits were imposed when cars took up to ten times further to stop than they do now.
The high gearing on modern cars makes it very difficult to drive economically in some speed restricted areas, thus causing more pollution. These are revenue based schemes to feed the pockets of them wot setemup ;)

Sadly you can loose your licence completely in one longish journey with our County policing.

There used to be somewhere on the south coast that had 4 fixed cameras in a mile. I remember quite a few years ago somebody on a motorbike got caught by them and tried to claim that if the police had been following him/ caught him it would have been one offence, but I don't think it worked.

Luckily there's not many fixed ones in the north east (partly due to Durham Constabularies policy of mobile cameras rather than fixed ones). It's those new SPECS cameras which are the really evil ones.
