Should I buy a steam cleaner to re-fresh synthetic clothing?

Thinking of buying a steam cleaner to clean hard to reach areas in the kitchen, and also to kill odour causing germs on clothes/shoes. Could synthetic gym shirts (that are not supposed to be washed at high temperatures) get damaged from the steam?
I'd prefer one that could also be used for kitchen cleaning, small rugs, shoes, and not just clothes, and I'd prefer a slightly larger tank (500 ml or larger) as the small tanks seems to run out very quickly. Any recommendations?
