I have suffered for years from getting plaque on the back of just my front teeth, i have tried various things such as just brushing the back, using a pick to remove it etc but it keeps coming back. The Dentist said its because of my fruit eating habit but i only eat red grapes and kiwi fruit occasionaly which my GP advised.
I don't want to give up my pleasures of eating healthy, i have tried various different toothpastes including xylite.

Plaque is soft and easily removed with a toothbrush.
Tartar is hard and cannot be removed with a toothbrush , it can only be removed with dental scaling.
Tartar is just plaque that has been undisturbed for at least 48 hours, in other words if a toothbrush touched the plaque any time in two days it would be cleaned off and you would not get tartar.
It is nothing to do with diet and everything to do with cleaning. You need to effectively clean behind the front teeth. Using disclosing tablets available from boots etc will make it easier to see the plaque and get rid of it before it gets hard.
In other words if you clean effectively you will never get tartar and you will never need scaling or need a pick to remove it.0 -
