Fuelpecker. Does anyone use it?

I recently received the following in an email,

The Fuelpecker card is not like a loyalty card that you just get points with. Users receive real fuel discounts based on the fuel type purchased.

Esso (Nationwide - over 1,200 stations)

Unleaded: 3p per litre

Diesel: 4p per litre

Super Unleaded: 5p per litre

Premium Diesel: 6p per litre

You can get these fuel discounts at all Esso locations (including those with a Tesco Express shop), as well as a flat 1p a litre discount at any Shell location. When you go to the forecourt you pay with your Fuelpecker discount card and the discount is then applied to the credit or debit card linked to your account.

It then goes on to add,

Fuelpecker is an alternative payment method at the pumps. When you fill up, instead of using your normal credit/debit card; simply go into the shop (i.e. does not work pay at pump) and pay with the Fuelpecker card.

Link your debit or credit card with your Fuelpecker account, once you’ve filled up, they’ll charge the amount from your card with the discount applied 72 hours later.

Sorry about the formatting but I was cutting and pasting from an Email. I got my email from Petrolprices.com but, upon searching, other organisations such as the Caravan Club have circulated similarly.

I received a similar email from PetrolPrices, but I didn't like the Terms and Conditions of the FuelPecker card - in particular, it made you (the cardholder) liable for all fraudulent use of the card, and also made you liable if Horizon Fuel breached the terms and conditions, which I assume is a typo, but that's what it said.

I received the same email. When I searched on PetrolPrices, 4 pence off Esso places nearby still wouldn't beat Asda or Sainsburys.

Esso UL is currently 5p dearer than Tesco / Asda for me plus I use my Tesco debit card at Tesco FSs and get 2 points per £.

I joined a few months ago - as I do fairly high mileage and my car doesn't like supermarket diesel I find it a very good deal especially as my payment method to fuelpecker is by way of M & S mastercard earning M & S vouchers and I collect nectar at Esso sites - easy to use and easy to set up.

Round here, esso & Bp are 22p a Ltr dearer than the supermarkets. Possibly because you have to travel about 5 miles to get to a supermarket..

Classic Manipulation by ESSO. Really should be illegal.

Trying to entice customers by offering x amount of petrol. Yet even with their discount their prices are higher then TESCO and ASDA.

    Dont fall for it

I've looked at these cards before and always found their discounts still mean the prices are higher than supermarkets

Its Fuelpecker who are offering the discount, not Esso. Round here at least the Fuelpecker discount does often make Esso 1-2p cheaper than Asda anyway. My journey to work passes an Asda, an Esso and a Tesco all within a mile or so of one another. Perhaps because of their proximity to two supermarkets this particular Esso always keep their prices very competitive, and with the Fuelpecker discount I can usually save by using it.

Why should it be illegal? You may as well say that Tesco Clubcard should be illegal because even with the Clubcard vouchers it's still more expensive the Lidl.

Asda is £1.02.7 for petrol and diesel is £1.08.7 here. Can't see any esso station getting anywhere near that.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • I occasionally buy Esso so I thought I might as well apply for the card and give it a try.

I got as far as entering my email address when I received the response that I already had a card, which was news to me.  I have never had a Fuelpecker card or any form of petrol discount card.

I suppose I could have tried to log in using the 'forgotten password' link, to see what came up, but I became uneasy at this point and decided not to progress any further.
