Long crack down nail

One of my thumbnails has what looks like a crack all the way down its whole length.  I had hoped it would eventually grow out, it hasn't!  At the top of the nail there's a constant split which catches on everything.
Is there anything I can do to 1) heal the fissure and 2) stop the top catching?
Thanks

A nail file should sort out the top.

Having had one of these for 3 or 4 months....  keep trimming as often as possible to minimise catching; use a glass file if you can.  If it's your dominant hand - that's more of a pain.   Or perhaps buy a lot of cheap plasters and keep it covered every day?
I need to think of something new here...

I do file it every day, at some point it will still catch and split.

Not my dominant hand and I file.  Was thinking about a little dab of glue!

Thanks for replying.  Is there any answer for the long term?  Will the fissure grow out?

My mum had this for years - sorted out when she started wearing gloves whenever doing the washing up.

  • It's possible to but some fibrous material and nail glue, this should help strengthen the nail, as others have said, use a glass nail file as these give the smoothest finish (even under microscope) which prevents snagging and also water ingress.

My fingernails often split or flake in spite of wearing rubber gloves for all wet jobs.
I file the nail then apply some "New Skin".  You will have to do this at least every day, but I find this helps until the nail regrows.  New Skin comes in a little bottle and looks like clear nail varnish - manufactured under the trade name Germoline.

I use nail glue or even superglue when I can't find the nail stuff.  Some people use the fabric bit of a tea-bag to cover the area (glue it down!).

The pharmacy had to order the new skin stuff which I collected today - many thanks for the guidance.
