I think your track record with posts and the difficulty you have real and/or imagined with transport authorities should make anyone very wary of advice you give.

I would argue that an authorised person has every right to use their discretion and allow the solo traveller to travel. Therefore if a guard is onboard (which isn't always obvious) the train, then approaching them before travel might be a good idea. Failing that you could always ask the ticket office if they are willing to issue you with a Permit to Travel, or for that matter endorse one of the tickets to be usable without needing another person with you.
I have only once (on arrival at st pancras) had ground staff checking tickets AND railcards and making sure everyone in the group physically present.
I was quite annoyed by this as it was a busy London service so it was chaos, so although it's only happened ONCE I would say it's not sufficent to have the ok from the guard on the train as there is a chance (albeit small) that you will get checked by ground staff.

Does a "permit to travel" or such an "endorsement" actually exist or did you just make those up?
I have never heard of them but it would have to be something physical and formally recognise by other staff for the reason explained.

Thanks. Does seem like it solves the issue though

“Permits to travel bear the warning that they are not fare tickets and must be exchanged for one at the first opportunity. The record of the station of issue means that passengers who travel using it cannot claim that they just boarded the train (allowing them to travel on a cheaper fare) if they are not reached by a ticket inspector until a few stops after boarding. Permits to travel are in any case valid for only two hours from the time shown on them.”
  • The UK "Covid-19 Lock Down" started 23rd Mar 2020, and since then the UK Government has imposed drastic measures to slow the spread of the virus, and one of those measures is to avoid non-essential travel and self-isolate - we should stay at home, and not meet others, even friends or family.

With the above in mind, my husband and I are extremely keen to adhere to the Government's advice and are therefore self-isolating, and unable to make use of the National Railway network, as dictated by the Government.   My husband and I purchased a £30 Two Together Railcard at the start of October 2019, and was wondering does anybody know what now happens to our Railcards validity due to end October 20?  According to the Government's advice we can no longer use the Railcards and feel that our Railcards validity should be extended for the complete period of Lock Down (23rd March 2020) until such time those restrictions above are relaxed or suspended.

I have searched throughout the National Railway Website and find no suggestions to what Railcard holders should do during this time of uncertainty to gain awareness, refund, Railcard extension etc, etc.
