Was Barclays being fair?

2014 £75,000 Mortgage was due to be fully paid up. My endowment & savings would cover £50,000, leaving me £25,000 to find. Approached Barclays, face-to-face interview, and was given a remortgage quote for £50,000 endowment AND £25,000 repayment which also meant the total monthly amount was still under my PPI ceiling. So I said YES (also kept on same interest as before - 0.29% over Bank of England rate). Sent in confirmation of salary & endowment and waited. I assumed that if Barclays had any problems they would contact me. Heard nothing and waited for first payment to be taken out August 2014, nothing, then September 2014. I contacted Barclays to ask what was happening and was told there wasn't a quote, then that they had not received my salary/endowment documents (I posted these myself through the local Branch letterbox). Needless to say they offered £200.00 compensation for their error, which I refused as I just wanted the original quote to be actionned. They said they could not do that and the next instance my Bank emails me to say £250.00 had been placed in my current account. NOT at my request, I can assure you. They then closed my Complaint!!
Over the next 4 years (yes years) conversations went back and forth with Barclays until February 2018 when, yet another advisor, I was told that the original quote would never have been granted. I then started receiving official letters from their solicitor saying my house was being repossessed as I had not paid my mortgage in 2014!! I did have to go to court but thankfully Court allowed me time to get another mortgage elsewhere to pay off Barclays. Barclays stung me for ALL the charges they incurred. I complained to the Ombudsman but they could only look into the repossession part and felt Barclays had been fair in taking me to court. BTW I NEVER stopped making payments to Barclays each month right up until I got the new mortgage from my own Bank!! I still feel very aggrieved but wondered what some of the professionals on here think?

I would expect the professionals on here to think the Ombudsman took a look at all the relevant documents and made a ruling to not uphold your complaint...That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Reading between the lines. I suspect the crux of the issue is the "mortgage quote". At branch level there'll be no one with the authority to issue a formal mortgage offer. During the following years you underpaid your mortgage resulting in a considerable sum of arrears and additional charges. Ultimately Barclays decided that the matter wasn't going to resolved and pursued the repossession route. Only fair that Barclays should recoup some of their costs for the time they expended micro managing your account. Both the Court and Ombudsman have agreed with Barclays course of action.
I'd suggest you move on. Life's too short to fight lost battles over and over again.0 -
I'd move on. Nothing to be gained from dragging this out any moreI am a mortgage broker and IFA. Not sure I understand the complaint tbh - if you knew that the mortgage was due to be repaid in 2014, and that the originally proposed remortgage from Barclays wasn't happening, surely you'd sort out an alternative remortgage then, rather than wait until 2018?0

I thought that Barclays "losing" my quote/documents would trigger a similar quote in in respect of cost and same interest NOT almost double mortgage payment and PPI, as they did at the time. With Hindsight, I should have sorted out an alternative mortgage elsewhere but I was hoping Barclays would come up with a satisfactory conclusion for both of us. I will put it to bed now but I will never knowingly do business with Barclays again. Thank you all for responding and in truth, telling me to move on from all of you, does help.0
