Just started baking great again, was using Aldi flour, but just tried marraiges extra strong, which I thought gave a smoother dough. What do people here prefer from a quality and value POV ?

I use Asda's bread flour. W8rose is good but needs to be on offer or it's bit priceyI tried Lidl's but found it "gritty" so stopped using itEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens1

Hmm - won't be a popular choice as they're not the cheapest, but I swear by Stoate's & Matthews' flours in general, as do our local baker and a couple of chef friends. Stoates are fairly local to us so I stop off & invest in some whenever I'm up that way, but they also deliver & sometimes its more economical for me to order it online rather than make a special trip. Our local health food shop also stocks it, but in standard size bags, which would last us just a couple of weeks; I usually buy the 8Kg sacks which last us for about 2-3 months.Angie - GC Jun 25: £244.17/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)2

I use Asda own brand in my breadmaker, never had a problem with it and I bulk buy it when it's on special (as it is now).Quot Libros, Quam Breve Tempus

I buy 10kg sacks of Chapatti flour (aka Atta flour) and us that for all my baking. Usually, Tesco’s own brand, but I’ve also happily used Elephant brand Atta flour. We buy whatever is cheapest/on offer, last time paying £4 so 40p per kilo. (The only time I had problems was with Tesco’s Value brand.). It’s a light wholemeal flour and as well as working beautifully in the bread maker, makes reasonably good cakes and pancakes. Just a teaspoon of baking powder per cup, in order to turn it into self-raising flour.

I have used chapati flour in the past and found it very good, and certainly excellent value.
These days, as part of our commitment to buying organic / local wherever possible, I buy some wholemeal from a small local mill, and Shipton Mill white organic from our local wholefood co-op. When visiting friends in the area, I stock up on Wessex Mill flour.
These are lovely high quality flours. I always reckon that in making your own bread you are increasing the quality, making it better value in principle, not necessarily saving pennies.
When every penny counts, I agree with PipneyJane3 -
I tend to use the Marriage's flour from Costco - 12 kg bags (I think). Nothing against other brands, but Marriage's is the only one I've found in bulk.2024 Fashion on the Ration - 10/66 coupons used

Tried some others but because I'm there every week I'm usually making with Aldi, find it as good as anything else but I do use Allison's yeast rather than any otherTight, Scottish Vegan
